5 Flight Log
The
flights listed here were taken from Randy’s “Form 5”, the official log for a pilots time and experience.
The hours listed are pilot hours although it was customary to share the
hours with the co-pilot. One “Pilot” would
fly the plane to the destination and the other pilot would fly home. There were exceptions based on experience or
knowledge of a specific area when a pilot first arrived in the area but
generally that was how it was done…… or supposed to be done. There are lots of stories about pilots not
sharing time. These pilots, who were
assigned as the pilot for the day, took all the flight hours that trip.
Although these flight times are taken
from Randy’s “Form 5”, according to several pilots in that area at that time,
that does not necessarily indicate every flight completed. Locations below are listed on the Form
5. Locations in Australia were not
listed due to security regulations for locations outside the base of
Townsville. Specific landing locations
included Sydney, Brisbane, Rockhampton, Cairns and Mackay.
I believe all logged hours were in a C-47
of the 22nd Troop Carrier Squadron.
Most of them were in a plane he normally flew with the nose art “Hoosier
Traveler” although he was flying a different (new) plane on his last flight.
